The fear of the Lord is not terror. It is reverenc The fear of the Lord is not terror. It is reverence.

In this week's homily, Father Mark recalled Jim Bakker, the televangelist who lost everything to scandal. Asked in prison if he had stopped loving Jesus, Bakker said he never did. What he lost was the fear of the Lord. He stopped taking God seriously.

That, Father Mark reminded us, is the quiet crisis of our age. We want a God who loves us, but too often we no longer hold Him in awe.

To fear the Lord is not to be terrified. It is to recognize that God is infinitely good, infinitely loving, and infinitely greater than us. As Mr. Beaver says of Aslan in Narnia, "Of course he isn't safe. But he's good. He's the King."

Fittingly on Father's Day, Father Mark shared the story of a father who lovingly disciplined his young son. The boy walked away not with fear of a cruel dad, but with a settled knowledge that the same dad who loves and hugs him often is also someone who means what he says.

So Father Mark leaves us with the question: Do you have the fear of the Lord in you? In how you live, in your family, in how you approach each day?

May we all grow in the fear of the Lord.
"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom." Proverbs 9:10

⛪️⚾️ Summer Church Challenge The Ecker kids took ⛪️⚾️ Summer Church Challenge

The Ecker kids took the challenge all the way to
the cornfields of Iowa, going to mass at the stunning Basilica of St. Francis Xavier in Dyersville. Builtin 1889, this medieval Gothic treasure is one of only two basilicas in the entire state, with twin spires rising 212 feet above the surrounding fields.

In 1956 it became just the twelfth church in the
United States raised to the rank of minor basilica. Look closely behind the kids and you may spot the striped umbraculum, the traditional papal umbrella that marks a church of this special honor.

Just down the road, the boys got to play ball at
the famous Field of Dreams. A sacred space and a baseball diamond in the same little town felt like the perfect summer pairing.

Pope Francis once reminded us that “sport can be a symbol of unity for a society, an example of
cohesion and a message of concord and peace.”
Whether we gather at the altar or gather on the
field, we are made for community.

Where has the challenge taken your family this
summer? Keep the photos coming! 🌽

Happy Father’s Day to the dads of Notre Dame! 💙 T Happy Father’s Day to the dads of Notre Dame! 💙

Today we give thanks for all fathers, grandfathers, godfathers, and father figures who faithfully lead, serve, and love their families. The ones who coach from the sidelines, pray at the dinner table, and show up day after day for the people they love.

Through their sacrifice, guidance, and steadfast presence, they reflect the very love of our Heavenly Father and help build strong homes rooted in faith.

“He shall turn the hearts of fathers to their children, and the hearts of children to their fathers.”
Malachi 4:6

We also give thanks for Father Mark, our spiritual father, who shepherds this parish family with such care. 🙏

We pray that God blesses every father with wisdom, strength, joy, and the grace to keep guiding those entrusted to him.

To all our dads, near and far, here and in heaven,
we honor you today.

Our Summer Church Challenge is in Croatia! 🇭🇷 Mar Our Summer Church Challenge is in Croatia! 🇭🇷

Mary Zinn-Batina attended Mass at the Cathedral of Saint Domnius in Split, where the entire liturgy was prayed in Croatian.

Fun fact: this is widely considered the oldest Catholic cathedral in the world still in use in its original building. It was built around the year 305 as the mausoleum of the Roman emperor Diocletian, one of history’s fiercest persecutors of Christians. Centuries later, his tomb was transformed into a cathedral honoring Saint Domnius, a bishop and martyr put to death during Diocletian’s own persecutions. The very monument raised to glorify the emperor now glorifies God and the saints he tried to silence.

What a beautiful reminder that the Mass is the same the whole world over. Different language, same Lord, same Eucharist, one universal Church.

Blessings on your travels, Mary. May Saint Domnius and Our Lady, to whom this cathedral is dedicated, watch over your journey and carry you safely home. 🙏

This Sunday's homily turned on two things: having This Sunday's homily turned on two things: having eyes to see, and having a wounded heart.

When the Lord looks out at the crowds, He sees their true condition. He sees the ones who are troubled, worn out, harassed, and abandoned. Father Mark reminded us that there is always more going on than what meets the eye. The mom hanging on by a thread. The lonely man walking the aisles. The Lord sees each of us at the deepest level, and He is tirelessly pursuing us in that very moment.

Do you have eyes to see what's really going on in other people's hearts, and even in your own?

Which brings us to a wounded heart. Jesus doesn't stop at seeing. Scripture tells us His heart was moved with pity for the crowd. The Greek word points to a gut-wrenching movement, a love that goes all the way down. He notices their suffering, then He allows that suffering to enter into His own heart.

"While we were still helpless, Christ died for the ungodly." Not after we fixed ourselves. While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. This is His Sacred Heart.

Jesus points to His own heart and says, look here. It is safe to bring the troubled and wounded parts of your heart to me. I see what is really going on in you. You can come to me.

On this 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, our bishops have invited us to consecrate ourselves, our families, and our parish to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

May we become a parish that knows the Sacred Heart, that is comfortable coming to the Sacred Heart, so as to look out at a world that is helpless and abandoned, and always point to Him.
